A Typical Day on Summer Staff

7:15am

Morning Gathering:

7:45am

Begin setting up staff dining room for breakfast. Dishroom crew begins shift. Others serve meal out to campers.

8:15- 8:30

Sit down to eat. Yes! Often just 10-15 minutes/meal to eat!

8:30-10:00

Begin your main work assignment (kitchen, housekeeping, grounds/maintenance).

If you are on dishroom, you and three others will wash dishes, pots and pans, and put away food items in the camp kitchen during this time.

10:00-10:20

All Staff Devotions: A chance to gather with the larger TRFC staff for a time of reflection and prayer facilitated by various Summer Staff team members.

10:20-11:50

Return to work assignments.

11:50-12:15

Help set up staff dining room. Serve lunch to campers.

12:15-12:45

Eat lunch.

12:45-3:45

If you are on lunch dishroom, you and three others will wash dishes, pots and pans and put away lunch food items in the camp kitchen. Summer Staff assigned as Lifeguards, Recreation Specialists, and to the camp store begin their 90 minute break while other staff return to work assignments.

3:45-5:15

Other staff begin afternoon break while lifeguards, recreation specialists, and camp store staff report to work.

5:15-5:45

Assigned Summer Staff report to dishroom. Others help set up staff dining room and serve dinner to campers.

5:45-6:15

Eat dinner.

6:15-8:00

If you are on "dishroom closing" this evening you will join five others in washing dinner dishes, pots and pans and cleaning the camp kitchen. If not, you get to relax.

8:30-9:30

Some evenings you will be free to do what you want. Other evenings you will be expected to attend various summer staff activities: Tuesdays: staff worship, Fridays: accountability groups, Sundays: staff fellowship.

Whew! Long day. It is exhausting--but it’s also rewarding and fulfilling working alongside others who aim to serve God fully and to help you develop a Christ-like perspective in often un-glamorous work! Keep in mind, there are probably a hundred variations on a “typical” day on Summer Staff (on Saturdays everyone cleans the camp, some nights you are not on a late shift, some weeks you will be counseling, etc.) Hopefully, this gives you a realistic idea of what you can expect.
